about this site

On this site you will find detailed information about nearly 7000 works which come under the general heading of 20th century violin concertos! But not everything is as easy as the title suggests, so I have to mention two aspects

What does   2 0 T H    C E N T U R Y   mean?

This site contains only works written between the years 1894 and 2006. No work composed before or after that will find its way into this anthology. If I do not know the year in which the work was composed and nevertheless list it here, it is because I had good reason to believe that it was written between 1894 and 2006 and it will stay on the site until it is withdrawn.

What does   V I O L I N   C O N C E R T O   mean?

Beside the time limit there is also a work limit, and so this site only provides information about works for at least one solo violin and any kind of accompanying ensemble. In most cases that means violin concertos i.e. concertos for violin and (string/wind) orchestra. But also other works for violin and orchestra belong in the anthology, such as rhapsodies, fantasies, capriccios, romances, or works with particular titles. Concertos for solo violin, orchestra and additional solo instruments can also be found in the database, i.e. concertos for 2 violins and orchestra, concertos for violin, cello, piano and orchestra, concertos for string quartet and orchestra, and so on. Additionally I list chamber music-like works too, if they are called concerto (or concertino), for example concertos for violin and piano or concertos for violin and string quartet. You can also find works for violin and electronic instruments, if the electronic accompaniment imitates the sound of larger musical ensembles. You will understand - and I know - that here my definitions become slightly fuzzy round the edges.
